If you had one afternoon to improve a page, would you redesign it or rewrite it?
We wanted to know, too, so we went back through 140 tests to see what changes made the biggest difference.
Again and again, it was the copy.
One example was a form that said:
“Billing Information”
We changed it to:
“Create Your Account”
And it won.
We tested that same change in other places, and it won there, too.
We also saw wins from changes like:
|
- “Get Started in 60 Seconds” as the headline
- Adding “Free” to a signup headline
- Putting “Risk Free” next to the form
- Removing “No Contract” copy
|
Meanwhile, we changed the layouts of pages that were already performing well, and the new versions didn’t perform as well as the originals.
We’ve seen design changes win, too. But looking across these tests, the strongest results kept coming from changing the copy.
So before you start changing the layout, colors, images, or other design elements, take another look at the words.
Could the headline make the offer clearer?
Could the form or button tell people more about what happens next?
Is there a simple line that could make taking the next step feel safer?
Those are the changes we’d test first.
Because you may not need to rebuild the page. You may just need to change the words.
