A long-running sweepstakes funnel to hack The results of posting every day for one year THE PET THAT MADE GARY DAHL A MILLIONAIRE In 1975, an advertising copywriter from California named Gary Dahl, was sitting in a bar joking with friends when he inadvertently stumbled upon a ridiculous idea that would make him a millionaire.   The friends were joking about what would make the perfect pet: one that required no care, no walks, and no clean-up.    Gary suggested the perfect pet would be a pet rock.   Easy to look after, not in any way needy, and it's unlikely to wake you up in the middle of the night by jumping on the bed.   In amongst the joking, a light went off in Gary's head and he saw something beyond the humor.    He pictured a product that played on the era's appetite for simple, humorous distractions during a time shadowed by events like Vietnam and Watergate.   With an entrepreneurial mindset and a strong knowledge of advertising, Gary was motivated to turn his joke into reality.   However, he knew that if it was going to work, he had to go all in on the joke.   So he came up with the idea that the rock should come in a special box and contain a guidebook on how owners could care for and train their pet rock. He found 2 people willing to invest in his project, sourced the items, and set about launching Pet Rock.   The product launch was bigger than he could ever have imagined!   It caught the eye of big retailers and the media alike and almost overnight became a phenomenon.   In just a few months around the holiday season, he sold between 1.3 and 1.5 million Pet Rocks. Naturally, the phenomenon of the Pet Rock was fleeting.    Despite the initial success, the Pet Rock fad was short-lived, with interest waning after the 1975 holiday season.    Yet, its brief run was enough to secure its place in history as a cultural phenomenon.   Dahl continued to explore other quirky ventures, though none matched the Pet Rock's success. TRIVIA ANSWER   Coca-Cola's entry into the Chinese market was met with a unique linguistic hurdle: the brand's name phonetically translated to "Bite the wax tadpole" in Mandarin.  Recognizing the critical role of brand perception, Coca-Cola embarked on an extensive search through over 40,000 Chinese characters to find a phonetic equivalent that matched their brand identity. The effort paid off when they settled on "Ko-kou-ko-le," which translates loosely to "Happiness in the mouth."
