Perhaps one of the marketing strategies you've dreamt about is creating a YouTube channel that produces an endless stream of customers for your business.
If that rings true, this one's for you…
Recently, we were lucky enough to sit down with the host of YouTube channels Film Booth and Creator Booth, Ed Lawrence.
For the past few years, Ed has been quietly helping info businesses create YouTube channels that generate millions of views and millions of dollars.
Naturally, we had to know his secrets. Ed didn't disappoint.
Here are the 8 secrets he shared with us…
1. The secret to a successful YouTube channel
"A lot of people think you need 50,000, 100,000 subscribers on YouTube to be successful but subscribers don't really matter. You can start making decent money with just 5000 views.
"As long as you're an educator channel that fixes a problem, there's actually a huge amount of buying power in there.
2. The Secret to hitting the ground running
"There are billions of videos on YouTube and only 0.001% get traction. You don't want to be another channel with 0 views.
"The secret to creating content your audience will want to watch is to find the creators in your niche who are doing well and find their outliers.
"These are videos that have significantly more views than the channel's average. They're so important because when a video breaks out, it's a sign that the topic is in demand, the title was incredibly appealing, the thumbnail got attention and created intrigue, and the content inside was rockin'.
"Look at those videos and ask yourself, 'why did this do so well?' Create a swipe file of these videos.
"Do the same for other channels and you will find patterns; particular words in thumbnails that do well, a certain type of heading that is associated with high views, a video length that does well. Start building it all together like pieces of the jigsaw puzzle and use your findings in your videos.
3. The Secret to creating a video that gets lots of views
"Most creators film the video first and then create a title and thumbnail around the video. This is the wrong way to start.
"YouTube is like marketing. To get people to view your video, you need to promise something that people will click on (using what you found in step 2) and then work out how to give them an experience that delivers on it.
"Your intro then has to answer the questions raised by the title and thumbnail otherwise people won't watch all the way through.
"If you create the video first, you then have to match your title to your intro and you often end up with something people aren't interested in watching.
4. The secret to videos people can't stop watching
"The easiest way to write a video that gets high retention is to look at your thumbnail and title and ask yourself, 'What three questions is the viewer going to have in their mind when they see that? What questions do they really want the answer to?'
"Then, in your intro, straight after your hook, you say, "and in this video I'm going to show you…" and then you set up that you are going to answer those three questions.
"If your thumbnail and title attract people to your video, and the content answers the questions people will be dying to know the answer to, as long as you keep it interesting, they will watch all the way through.
5. The secret to building a following
"The key to growing a following is you need credibility. If you haven't got credibility or can't make people think you're credible, you're kind of screwed. People need to know you're credible in order to spend time watching your video. That will come in different ways.
"First, if you've never made any videos before, you're going to be really bad at it. You need to get good at writing, presenting, designing thumbnails, storytelling, and all of these skills. That comes with practice.
"Another issue is the deeper I go into a topic, the worse a video will do. Right? So you have to think, how do I not overwhelm people?
"The way you do that is just by simplifying everything down to a level anyone can understand. But it's scary. Sometimes I'll simplify stuff to a level and I think, 'This is embarrassing!' But, in the comments I'll get people saying, 'That was amazing. I never thought of it like that before!' Even the experts love it. They think, 'Although I already know, that this guy knows his stuff.'
6. The secret to getting viewers to binge your videos
"I get messages all the time like, 'It's 4am and I've watched 15 of your videos, what are you doing?'
"If you keep people watching, you'll get more views, and more importantly, they're going to trust you and that's what makes it powerful for the business.
"If you can get people to watch five videos in a row, you build so much goodwill. And, they're usually ready to buy something.
"The secret to doing that is to suggest a new problem or the next step at the end of your video and tell them the answer is in the next video.
"You make them curious and they have to click the next video because they want to satisfy that curiosity. Before doing this I had 0.9% end screen click through rate and once I started doing it, it went up to 20%.
7. The secret to making your channel a financial success
"The problem with YouTube is you get taught to be a YouTuber. And what that means is you follow the rules of entertainment channels.
"But, being a YouTuber is a 15 hour a day job. When do you have time to work on the business? What I recommend people do is you break YouTube into two levels.
"Level one is just growing a following. So all you focus on are the tasks to grow a following we've discussed here. You want to get about 5000 views per video as a niche educator. That's the goal.
"When you hit that you can switch to what I call level two.
"This is where you build an offer or product. This is key for longevity and sustainability. At this level you make a simple low ticket product. Something that can generate you 5 figures per month.
"Once you've got that, you go back to focusing on growth because you now have a new purpose: get sales.
"Without that this whole system doesn't work. People just become YouTubers, and they get loads of views and they make no money and they burn out and fail.
8. The secret to generating 5-figures per month+
"5 figures per month may sound like a lot but many creators can get to this number with a simple 90 minute video workshop.
"When I'd just built the 2 level system, I taught a small group of YouTube creators, gave them the exact steps to follow, and told them to build the workshop.
"One lady did $36,000 in her first seven days. Multiple did 25. And these are small channels. The lady who did $36,000 had 500 people on an email list and something like 20,000 subscribers to her channel.
"So now she has a product she can push people to until she's ready to make another one."
The two things that typically stop people from creating a successful channel are:
- They create videos (and titles and thumbnails) people aren't really interested in
- They're not good on camera
If you have ever created a VSL, video social media content, webinars, or challenges, you have already gone a long way to mastering number 2.
