In 1968, Dr. Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3M, was attempting to develop a new adhesive that was stronger than what was currently on the market. However, he ended up creating a low-tack, reusable, pressure-sensitive adhesive instead. This adhesive didn't bond strongly to surfaces, which seemed like a failure for its original purpose. For several years, the potential applications for this adhesive were unclear, until a colleague of Silver's, Art Fry, realized in 1974 that this adhesive could be used to anchor his bookmark in his hymnbook without damaging the pages. This idea eventually led to the development of Post-it Notes, which were launched by 3M in 1980 after a successful market test in 1977.
